This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
Received call several times, each time its from a male with an accent claiming that my name and ssn have been given to him regarding a legal matter. Also states that if I don't call him back that I will be embarrassed when the police show up on my job and tell my employer about my debt. By the way, the same man calls every so often with different names, etc. (Mike Williams, Michael Jones, Michael Brown, etc) Same Person!!!!!
They call several times then left one very rude and disturbing voicemail. Threatening to have me arrested. Impersonated an officer. Said he was from the California State Department Sheriff's Office but the number was from Florida?? Said they received a federal complaint from some federal department. And that I can turn myself in to their local office or face the consequences. He was totally reading from a script, and couldn't even get that right! Said he was Officer Sheriff Alfred Marshal yet had a major Indian accent. Wish these losers would leave me alone already. They call from different numbers saying they are different (phony) departments. Don't they know their scam has been reported on the news??
The story was on Good Morning America and Dateline also did a feature. If you type in Indian debt scam several articles should come up. These bozos have been doing this for a few years now. I know I started getting calls the beginning of 2010
