Moments ago, I got an unsolicited call from "Stephanie at Card Services", wanting to lower my credit-card interest-rate to 3.9% for life.
Lots of background "chatter", and other voices reciting the same script that Stephanie was reciting.
Upon her request, I gave her _BOGUS_ birth-date, current credit-card expiry-date, and credit-card number.
She knew my name, but 30 seconds with a Google-search on my ten-digit telephone-number will show my name & address.
I asked for the city from where she was calling. Her first answer: Canada. Wrong!
I asked again, and she answered British Columbia. Wrong! BC is not a "city".
I asked again, and she answered Delta, which is a BC city.
Note that area-code '905' is *NOT* assigned to B.C.
So, she's probably using a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) to "spoof" her telephone number.
She wanted to "verify" my information, and then to pass my call to her supervisor.
I finally hung-up on her, after wasting 8 minutes of her time.
I hope that she gets fired at the end of the week, for being the least-productive person at her call-center.
Got a call yesterday from this number, some guy with strong accent, I could hardly understand him. Also there were a lot of voices in the background and everytime I spoke the voices would be quiet and then come back when I spoke. Must be an activated silence thing on the phone line. Anyway, he talked so fast and I got the gist of what he was doing, I heard, Mastercard Visa head office, lower rates. The weirdest thing about this call it came immediately after I made an online purchase to reserve a room for a trip I'm making next month. Is it possible that somehow our transactions are monitored? Monday I'm calling the credit card company and enquiring about this.
I told the guy I only talk with the company in person and he said they are the company, how stupid do they think I am, there is no Mastercard Visa head office.... it's one or the other. I really hope people are not falling for this scam.
Just received call claiming to be Head office of Visa and Mastercard for "all the Banks". Wanted to lower interest rate to 3.9 if I gave my birthdate. Did not seem to know my name or any other info. I've heard all this before but asked where this office is located... Thick accent /noisy background but could here this guy asking someone for the name of a city in Florida. He then hung up on me. I immediately called it back and listened to a very apologetic guy explain that someone had hi-jacked his phone number and was using it to scam "thousands" of people, who, have tried calling this number back. - Bell is involved now and supposed to block this number.
Man with heavy accent referred to my as Mr.(given name.) He said because I always pay my monthly balance in full, he was offering me a special promotional .99% interest rate. Go figure! I tried to explain that if someone never carries a balance on their credit cards the interest rate is irrelevant. He couldn't understand what "irrelevant" meant. If he's working on commission, he must be starving!
