In Orange County, NY. Got a call at 10:01am and after 3 rings it stopped. Caller ID said State Troop. They left no message. Irratating since the first reaction is that something is wrong.
Got a call from 914-339-9708 with State Troop in the caller I.D. First thing I thought one of my kids was in accident or something. Answered the phone,no one there, after a few seconds a man came on calling me by my first name. Looking for a donation the Stop DWI Fund for the NY State Troopers. Thought this was suspicious since I have never heard of the state police phone soliciting for donations. Told him twice I could not help and he hung up.
I would suggest calling the real phone number for your state's State Trooper/State Police/Highway Patrol, look it up in the government section of your phone book (but don't dial an emergency line or 911), and let them know that someone is making solicitation calls while passing themselves as state police, as per their caller ID.
Impersonating an officer is a crime.
This number has called my elderly grandfather's home. When I answer, there is a pause then whoever it is hangs up. When I try to call the number back, the mailbox is full.
Received call from 914 339 9708. Caller identified himself as Captain Smith of the New York State Police. I hung up. I am former Court Officer, Thereore, notified NYSP in my county of the scam.
I live in Monroe County and has received several of these calls from this number. Tonight, I searched the phone number. Caller ID said State Trooper. I read the replies list above. I just happen to be on Social Security Disabiity. Thanks for sharing this info. I'm notifying the Attorney General's office tomorrow am.
