Caller ID said New York call. Didn't answer the cell phone. No message left. Wouldn't have answered it anyway because they called during Downton Abbey!

Received a call from this number twice today. Had a strong Indian accent. Said he was from Federal Loan Company for Student Loan Repayment. Guess what!!! No thank you. Told him to remove me from his call log or I was pressing charges for harassment. Little does he know that I work in a law firm.. HaHa Joke is on you.

He called and asked about the register Windows Operating System user. I told him there were a few people in the house that used Windows and asked again, who he was calling for. He kept repeating himself. I told him if he didn't have a name of who was registered, I didn't believe him and he hung up! Lol!

Got a call from man with a heavy accent saying he from Window's and wanted me to fix my computer from hackers. I said take my number out of your database and STOP CALLING ME! He said he couldn't stop until my problem was fixed. I told him he was my only problem, hung up and restricked his number. He did give me another "800" number of 646-433-8811 and also called back from 917-522-8863. I have also received the same call from 670-0001, 696666962 (?) and 20062016. There are other numbers that I did not answer that are probably from same guy.  He will not stop calling! What can I do short of changing my number?

Most of these "Windows" scammers are calling every possible number in an (area code + exchange) so even if you get change your number, eventually they will call that too.

The best way to handle most of these is to take evasive action. Ignore calls from numbers you don't recognize and let them go to an answering machine or voice mail.

But some scammers persistently call for a long time before they give up and move on to other numbers to try their scams. If they spoof their numbers, they might try using the same (area code + exchange) that your number is, to try to trick you into thinking the call a local call from someone you know.

* For a land line, get a call blocker.
* For a smartphone, get an app.
* For a not-smartphone, assign the number a name like ZJERK1 so you will recognize it quickly as a call not to be answered. You might need a ZJERK2 and ZJERK3 for other numbers as time goes on. If you can assign a silent ringtone, do that.
