I also have just received 6 messages in the past 10 min. from a man with a strong indian accent saying his name is William Brown and call back at 206-548-4443. the number is registered in seattle. His message stated he was a lawyer and if I didn't call him back good luck.
Although I appreciate the info from "EC" and now knowing it is a scam and I too am still getting these stupid calls from the same man I tend to agree with BC on this. I have filed complaints left and right. I just filed another one against the "officer" calling my job and harassing anyone and everyone that answers the phone but I see nothing happening. The calls stop for a day or two but they start up again same man caller ID says 1 number and the number I am to call back is a different one. I'm starting to think itsnt going to do a bit of good. I'm up for anything to make the calls stop.
Unfortunately, most consumers who are targeted by these criminals don't report them. As a result, it's not a high priority for most law enforcement agencies. If the people receiving these calls reported them to law enforcement each and every call, law enforcement may finally take notice and track down the American crooks behind this foreign phone bank's activities. It's the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" strategy. It's nice to see that the West Virginia Attorney General has gotten personally involved in stopping this scam, and that ABC News has done a report about it; both of these events are the result of consumers making repeated complaints.
The best way to stop these crooks is to cut off their money. In other words, if we can spread the word that this is a scam, it's more likely that less people fall for it. That's why I repeatedly post warnings here and in other forums; so that those targeted by these criminals know it's a scam and refuse to pay.
There's no quick solution to this problem. My best advice is to report each and every call to federal and state authorities and record those calls for law enforcement if you can.
This is a great site. I would like to say thank you for all of you that have written in. I received a call about a month ago, never picked up the phone and then today Dec 16th another call. I didn't answer that call this time either. They never left a number and I couldn't understand what he was saying. I'm so glad i found this site. I just typed the number in and this site popped up. Thanks for the information. I know now.
I looked this number up on "Who Owns this Number" and it said this was a spoof number to trick you into answering. Sean/Shawn Peterson called from this number to my job, cell, house and best fried within 10 minutes. He told my boss this was regarding a legal matter with CNA and left the number 904-592-6283 which is a home in Florida. From what I can understand of the messages, on my cell he left the message that I needed to return the call before my name was damaged. On the home phone he left the message that it was a legal matter that I needed to call about before my name was damaged. I should call within 1/2 hour so he could help me with this mess. On my friend's phone he left a message that it was about a legal matter. U had several calls in September leaving the same type of message. I called the number back and only got voicemail. I left several messages requesting verification in writing and once requested that someone that was a native english speaker call me so that I could understand what was being said.
