The caller is always a woman with a southern US accent. She asks for my "mother" -- I'm 41. When I tell her mom isn't home, she says she'll call back and refuses to say who she is or why she is calling. I managed to get out, "put us on your do not call list," before she hung up. We'll see if this works.
It's a fund raising organization - the kinds that raises funds and takes a cut off the top (probably 80-90%) and gives the leftovers to the group you thought you were helping. In my case it was a local Lions club. A couple donations, followed by calls, sometimes 5 per day, until I finally answered and told them to stop calling. which they didn't. Still more calls. Now every time this number shows up, I call the president of the local Lions club at home. During dinner time. And complain. Loudly.
It's a commercial organization hired to raise funds for a charity, in this case a Lions club. They've been calling me for years. I foolishly donated years ago and now they will not go away. About 6 months ago I contacted the director of the local Lions club to complain. She said she would fire them immediately. I guess she's just more interested in keeping the money flowing in so she can have her weekly
"charity" luncheon at the country club than in maintaining the integrity of her organization.
I've tagged this as a telemarketer because making a "donation" to this "charity" will net the "charity" only a few cents on the dollar. The overwhelming majority goes to the commercial fund-raiser.
Do not ever give to a charity that calls you via this type of mechanism. Ask if the caller is working for a commercial fund-raiser and if the answer is yes, scratch that charity off your list forever. They are not good stewards of your money.
