Originally, there were only three area codes for mobile phones: 917 for Globe Telecom, 918 for Smart Communications and 973 for Express Telecom, the three existing mobile companies at the time. As service grew rapidly throughout the 1990s and even until today, new codes have been added to fulfill demand as existing codes have since been exhausted. Codes added usually come after the immediate last code exhausted, although this may not be the case when the next code is already in use.
Express Telecom, formally Express Telecommunication Co., Inc. and Extelcom for short, is the Philippines' first mobile phone network operator. They operate an analog AMPS/CDMA network and remains to this day the only analog network currently operating in the Philippines. Extelcom has yet to upgrade its cellular operations to GSM from and therefore cannot offer the hugely popular text messaging service. In 2004, they hold only 0.12% share of the Philippine mobile market of 50 million subscribers (estimate 2007).
Just received a call from this number, one ring. I was expecting a call from my fiancee in the Philippines. She usually rings my phone once and then I call her back. So I called and she confirmed that she had just called. First time I have ever seen this happen. Though I have been out of the country for the last 11 days (in Philippines with fiancee and family). Hope this helps ease some of the apprehension.
