There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:

Note particularly the links at that site, warning of the scam!
I work for the state at a group home and there was a message on our answering machine Saturday saying somebody Smith with a thickly accented Indian voice supposedly from the IRS. Seriously, who do these people think they're fooling?? So obviously a scam.
We received twice call from this number and identified their self (0ne female, one male) as IRS and left a voice mail message for us to call them if we don't call them IRS will take legal action on us. I want to report this.
Left VM on my cell saying it's Heather Gray from IRS, calling abut time-sensitive issues, I need to call them back before they take "legal allegations". Do not have Caller ID on home phone.
We received several messages from a gentleman saying he was from the IRS. My husband called him back and they stated they were going to seize our house and our drivers licenses for three years. Really?
