Same thing happened to me. When I told them I was calling the actual IRS 800 number they got crazy! Started yelling at me that I only had 1 hour to take care of this before being thrown in the police show up at my door and my accounts frozen, but that I had to take care of it right then on the phone- that I should borrow money from someone to put down so that the charges would be dropped, and that they would just reverse the payment the next day lol. Oh my gosh. Ya, because that makes sense? The IRS giving money back to someone who owes them money, especially thousands lol Good grief.
Man called from this number. Caller ID said Bainbridge WA. He said he was calling to renew my yearly student loan refinancing from some company. When I told him I had no idea what he was taking about he quickly said never mind, forget that you received a call from this number and hung up.
