They called and said they were from my Canadian bank and that my VISA card had been used for a $300 eBay purchase and an $1100 western union transfer. I could barely hear them because of static and thick accents. They asked me to go to my computer and press the Windows key, which was super suspicious. When I asked whether they could confirm that they were from my bank, they gave me a long scare tactic about how the RCMP has been notified and fraud is very serious and we don't want to alert the fraudster. They could only give me the first four digits of my card number, which is common knowledge for each bank. I found this very suspicious and they hung up on me.
I just reread my message above and noticed that I wrote down the month, not the day of my call from 239 574 8866. If anyone is keeping track, it was Nov. 29, not Nov. 11. Sorry. And incidentally, Scott above mentioned another number - 152 027 7686. Unless rules have changed very recently, ANY calls from an area code starting with '1' are from a faked number. The codes for U.S.A. and Canada start at 201 and go up from there.
I received a call from the same number. He said Visa and Mastercard use the same security company (which I found hard to believe). When I pressed him for his information he gave me a local Nova Scotia number rather than a 1-800 (maybe an attempt to sound legitimate?). Thanks to all who have reported this.
Just got woken out of a deep sleep with the same scam--my card was "used on e-bay and for western union." I listened for a while because i was still asleep and I wanted to hear exactly what the scam would be. I imagine they try to get you half asleep so that you panic and give info before thinking. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
In NS just got a call from 239-574-8866 at 7am from visa security (at least it wasn't visa mastercard this time). My visa is inactive. Yelled at him and asked if he knew what time it was. Even when hubbys bank card was legit scammed they called after 8:30am.
They said mine was at 4am , and they were making another purchase of a 1,000 $ as we spoke ,I did not give any information about card but noticed as we keep speaking , that he knew my address and about a purchase on E-bay mmmm makes me wonder that e-bay security sucks
