I just got this call and the guy kept saying the same thing, that he's with AMEX and that he wanted to verify the company's info. I used to be in sales and when the person on the other line asks you a question that does not follow the script it's obvious there is a script when they just repeat their question. A company like AMEX would have a much better script than just "I'm calling to verify the company's information". I'm labeling it as a scam because my gut tells me so.
3 tells are
1. Vague intro and request
2. Using a 201 area code that I could call back. (usually it's a menu based 1800 number that they call from)
3. He didn't give his name and answered as soon as I called the number back.
AMEX is too big for all of these little mistakes. This is someone who is getting paid to get info from new businesses for a database or scam. Don't be too gullable and give out info.
I worked for AMEX sometime ago and they would never ever ask for updated information in this way. When they provided you a bill they would have you update the information at this time or you would make the initial contact. This caller is running a scam as you can see some say they are from AMEX and others say a collection agency. In addition a large corporation such as AMEX who monitors how long they leave someone on hold would answer within seconds.
Oh, they told me they were from AMEX verifying info and I hung up.
Called AMEX and they said that this is a fradulent number and to not give any information to this phone number. Basically, American Express would not reach out to you on your cell phone or call you. You would be left a message to call one of their 800 numbers. THIS IS A SCAM!
I recieved the call to my office and the Indian man said I am calling from American Express to update our info. (wheneve I hear that I know its a scam), but I went on to give the idiot stupid information. He asked what type of American Express Card do you have (not so smart, if your from american express you should now what type of card i have) I told him a have a black card with a neon box. The caller (which never gave his name) tells me "great", then he continues to ask the name of our account dept manager, my response "his name is Jesse James". Caller says "can I speack to Mr. Jesse James". my response "he has gone to a summer vacation in Russia and should be back by July". caller says what is a good time to call back so I can update our file. my response "no need to call Jesse James he is a wanted man a very busy guy, I will telll him to call you, what is your home phone number and address" at that point all i herd was the beep...beep...beep... sound of there recording device (im sure they want to record the real card holder and use it for a calling scam). the caller then asks me again can I call back in the afternoon. my response "No one will be here the whole office is going out to make snowman with our bikini next to the pool". the caller then said I have updated you information thank you and have a nice day. ALL OF US IN THE OFFICE ARE STILL CRACKING UP FROM THIS IDIOT... LOL
