I just got this call and the guy kept saying the same thing, that he's with AMEX and that he wanted to verify the company's info. I used to be in sales and when the person on the other line asks you a question that does not follow the script it's obvious there is a script when they just repeat their question. A company like AMEX would have a much better script than just "I'm calling to verify the company's information". I'm labeling it as a scam because my gut tells me so.
3 tells are
1. Vague intro and request
2. Using a 201 area code that I could call back. (usually it's a menu based 1800 number that they call from)
3. He didn't give his name and answered as soon as I called the number back.
AMEX is too big for all of these little mistakes. This is someone who is getting paid to get info from new businesses for a database or scam. Don't be too gullable and give out info.
They called at 8:30 this morn, identified themselves as AMEX affiliated. They asked for the name of our small business, I told her she called me and she should provide it. . she did (started company in '06). She asked who was in charge of finances, I told her to tell me who she had listed. She gave my wife's first name and her last name from a previous marriage (we were married in '05 so the names should not be connected to the business). I told the woman she had the wrong name, that my wife had remarried and did she have an alternate name. The woman asked for my name, I provided my first name, when she asked for my last, I told her that I would not provide that info over the phone, as then she would have NEW information. I told the woman to submit a form to the address they had on file and we would make corrections. . She became irritated. I told her that identity theft is a reality and a large company like AMEX should support my concerns. . SHE HUNG UP! She had called my cell phone that rolls over to my house. My cell phone is NOT attached to the business.
WE DON'T CARRY NEGATIVE BALANCES IN OUR BUSINESS. . THIS IS NOT DEBT COLLECTIONS!
Um I would think that this is a scam. When I called back. It was a foreign voice recording please hold until next agent. I will not answer or call back again. All my bills are paid. So, I have no idea why anyone would be contacting me.
I got a call today and lady said she was from "Open AMEX" wanting to update my business information. I told her I do not have a AMEX account and she replied she knew that. I asked her then why is she calling me? She said she is updating my business information and she worked for the card company offering me a special deal and again ask me to confirm my information. I asked her you no what? she said what I said its " NUNYA DAMN BUSINESS" I called AMEX and reported it to security and the New Jersey attorney generals office (1-866-847-7425). the number is listed to: American Exspress

Received a call from this number on my cell. Said they were from American Express Open and this was not a sales call. Since I was in my car and I said I would call back when I got to work. Called back; they asked for my business information. I told her to tell me what she had and she said she didn't have my data in front of her. This just doesn't sound right, so I told her I wasn't giving her any information over the phone and hung up. Am going to report this to American Express.
