I got several calls from this number today, stating i will be arrested if i didnt pay a penalty. They said they are calling from state investigation agency.
I don't have a caller ID. When I asked them to give me a number to call back, they gave me this number.
They called me very early in the morning. Since I got out of bed perplexed, it took me a couple minutes to understand that this is a hoax.
They told me that they are calling from IRS and homeland security is listening in a three way call. I say they, because first, a person introduced himself as from IRS, and then he transferred the call to his "manager". The manager introduced himself as Eric Matthews.
He said I would get arrested because of some money transfer at some year. All my bank accounts, home, cars, etc. would be detained. Also, I would be put into the jail. When I told him what they are expecting me to do, he said I can pay a penalty now, or local police officers will be at my doorstep in half an hour to arrest me. That's when I realized it's a scam.
They are somewhat prepared though. I asked for a case number, they told me some 7 digit number. I asked them how much I should pay, they told me some amount, and mentioned that if I lose the court, that penalty will be about 5 times of what they have said, and they gave me another number. They told me that they sent me a couple postal mails but I didn't respond to them. I asked them to tell me my address so I understand to which address they sent it, but they couldn't and said they don't have that information immediately. Well, good luck sending a police officer to my door if you don't even know my address.
This is a scam. Indian accent, said name was "Mr. Brown" calling from IRS, and asked if I was aware of a complaint that had been filed in my name. Did the whole "this line is being recorded" trying to sound legit. Offered to transfer me to a supervisor once I said it sounded suspicious. Basically they are trying to get money from you. They called multiple times. Do not give them any information. They know nothing but pretend like they do.
A South-Asian sounding, very heavily accented man introduced himself as Mr Justin Brown calling from the IRS. when I hung up, he called and said, "you hang up? why you hang up, huh?". I told him that I know it's a scam and he said, "oh - how you know that?". I hung up again and they called back, twice, with a different number. Completely creepy and obviously a complete scam.
They called my mother yesterday with the same IRS introduction. When I called them to inquire this AM I got no answer, interesting enough they called back immediately the number I had called. He insisted on knowing what number (not what name) my mother has. He started telling me about how this call is monitored by the homeland security. This is clearly a HOAX. My guess it is originating from India since everyone that has either called me or answer my call back has had a heavy Indian accent. This is clearly a Phone Phishing technique and can be done easy with IP phone from anyone in the world....
