They called me as well. I am surprised that they are able to get away with this for so long. I think that the biggest hint that this was a fraudulent phone call is because the person that left me a message could not be understood. The IRS would not have someone who could barely speak English call people about tax issues. Secondly, the IRS doesn't go around calling people, they send letters! What a joke!!

This joke calling himself Officer McSparkle (I wish that was the joke) left a message on our machine today for my wife (U.S.-born, Indian name). His accent was a little difficult to place for me (I speak several languages and have a good ear for nationality), but that I had a ridiculously hard time understanding what he was saying and that he sounded a little too scripted and over-explaining tipped me that it was probably garbage. Same as Hien above, more or less. The only reason I bothered to check into it was that we've previously had difficulties with my wife's employer improperly deducting her taxes, and why risk it? So thanks to everyone for reporting.

FWIW, companies exist just to data mine people who seem to be foreign nationals (my wife gets a lot of junk mail etc.) and try to either scam them or sign them up for expensive-but-useless services. If you or your loved ones don't have obviously white American names, there's a good chance that you're a target.

I got a message on my answering machine, to call them back because i owed money to the IRS. About a month ago, I received other phone calls with the same area code, saying basically the same thing, that if I did not pay them over the phone a sheriff was going to come get me. Big scam!!!! hang up, ignore them, do not call them back!!!!
