I am a Canadian citizen and I am receiving the same calls, he claims to be with the Federal Government here in Canada and has left threatening messages on my voice mail. These scammers need to be stopped!
Yep, got a call this afternoon from these guys -- they accused me of committing tax fraud and said that they were just calling me to do a favor but that the cops were on their way to arrest me because I owed some crazy amount of money. Then they got down to the root of the matter -- they said they could 'settle' it, they would give me fifteen minutes to call back or the offer wouldnt' stand. yeah, RIGHT. That it so not the way the IRS works. Even though I knew from the minute the phone call started that it was baloney, it was kind of unsettling -- the guy was very insistent and I can see how this scam must work on people.
I have gotten over 20 calls from this number and I spoke with the IRS about this company. The IRS stated that they don't call or do business over the phone. If a person owed money or was being audited, the IRS would send correspondence via the mail in a letter, not a phone call
This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Yes I received a phone call left on my answering machine. Spoken in a dialect from India. Broken muffled language -at first difficult to decipher. The person Stated my name in full which was disturbing, and used my phone number which is private. Stated he was officer ...and that I was " found to have committed fraud on your taxes." At the end of the message he told me " to have a nice day". I knew right away it was a scam- The government doesn't call you, they would send a certified letter. I looked up the phone number in reverse - it came from Washington,DC. Y-Max communications. So it seems they have committed fraud themselves in acquiring information to be able to reach out to people with this continued scamming. Thank you Rex IRS for information above.
Yup got a message left on the answering machine stating it was jonathan knight IRS officer badge number 46719 about fraud . thank god i found this page saved me a lot of trouble and time. never will call back. will report this on the page posted above.
