I live in Virginia and have experienced 2 calls a day from the same number for the past week. Just filed a complaint with the FTC. Thanks for confirmation of this call as a scam.
Just got a message about bring investigated. Freaked me out alittle. Tried to call number back. Kept disconnecting me. Someone with middle easy accent. Finally got someone on the line. He asked for my social security # and birth date. I refused. He started threatening me with legal action. I Asked to speak with his supervisor. He said they were not availiable at this time. I refused any information and hung up. Big time scam!!!
I got a call from him (Greg Miller from Tax Crime Investigation Department) again today. He left the same message. His accent was bad. I did my best to copy what he left. He said, "This is Greg Miller calling from Tax Crime Investigation Department. The reason to call you is to inform you there is a lawsuit against your name, ------, and the information you have on your record. I need you to ------- to return my call. The number to reach me is 202-241-2642. I repeat 202-241-2642. Don't disregard this message and do return a call. If you fail to return a call, unfortunately, we have to pursue a legal procedure. Make sure to call us back as soon as possible." Watch out! He is persistent!
These calls are not coming from the IRS or anywhere else in the US government.
Here is a story from FOX 13, Tampa Bay, Florida about these calls. It's the best explanation I've found so far of these calls as well as what to do when you receive one and to whom to report the call and how:
