There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Got a call from 202-506-8656. The call pretended to be from IRS. The person was indicated legal actions. It was very strange message. I called back. The person that picked up phone had very strong Indian accent. He told me that it is a fraud, do not call back and he hang up on me. Tried to call back. He blocked my number
Just received the same call from 202-506-8656 advising me that I (my name) was being sued by the IRS and that he needed the name and address of my attorney. After having listening to him I hung up as IRS has not contacted me via mail (snail mail) and recently made a large purchase with no liens listed on my credit. It's a fraud!
This is definitely a fraud!!! They are targeting senior citizens. You will get a call from one guy with a heavy Indian accent and "claiming" to be calling from the IRS & telling me that they is a lawsuit for me. He tells you to call 'Drexter Cruz' at 202-506-8656 to get more details. So, I call and asked for 'Drexter Cruz' and he is not available, but 'Jose' can help you. This 'Jose' is an [***] and gives you only 50 mins to settle the issue by paying them or they 'claim' they will send a warrant out for my arrest and hangs up on you. These people needs to be caught and put into jail!!
