BCR stands for Bureau of Collection Recovery.  They have been calling my home without stop for almost 6 months now trying to track down the son of a person who owned our home over 3 years ago.  I guess since they couldn't find a number for the old owner of this home, they just did a search of the address and began calling us.  They are rude, nasty and will not listen.  I have called the company many many times to tell them to get me off the list but they still continue to call my home late at night, multiple times during the day and even on Sunday.  I've tried to block their number, but they just use a different line to call.  I'm contacting a lawyer.  If you have any other suggestions on how to get these jerks to stop calling, please share.

Whether the debt is legitimate or not, you can easily put a halt to any collection agency's calls by invoking your legal rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If they keep calling you, send them a certified letter notifying them that 1) they have repeatedly called your phone number numerous times even though you have nothing to do with the debt they are collecting, and that 2) per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, they are to cease and desist contacting you.  After receiving your cease and desist letter, the collection agency can legally contact you just one more time.  After that, any attempt by the collection agency to contact you is illegal.  I would conclude the letter by warning them that if they don't abide by the law in this matter, you'll file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, your state's attorney general and purse civil action against them.

Even though you're not the person BCR is looking for, here are some sample cease and desist letters that you can adapt to your particular situation:

If you'd rather not write the letter yourself, you can always have an attorney send a cease and desist letter to the collection agency.

Good luck!

Hi, I have had the same experience, I inherited a phone number from a bad debtor I guess. What did your lawyer say or do?

I am just about to change my phone number! Can't stand it anymore.

If you have about an hour and like to have a little fun, Google search some sound boards Dr. Phil, Mr Rogers and Ms Cleo are some of my favorites. The next time they call your phone, just call back the number and start blasting the sound boards. They will think its funny until about the 30 th call in a row then usually you will get the supervisor. Then explain the way to get you to stop from jamming their phone system and tying up their operators is to not call your number again. Most stop after the first time but a few need 2 or 3 sessions. You have to fight fire with fire. Do not hide your number let them see who is calling them. When the supervisor comes on firmly explain that this will happen every time they call your number and follow up even if you have to do a little bit later then right after they call. It is pretty fun and has worked every time for me.
