Two calls came in yesterday the first from the "IRS" told me to call the 202-618-1898 number, I did and spoke to Frank Robinson (Special agent #9094) without even knowing my name he gave me a case number (CD1024) and told me I could avoid a costly court judgement if I simply gave him a VISA card to charge the $4499 in back taxes that I owed for 2008. I told him I was not able to pay and hung up on him. About an hour later I got another call that told me to call 202-503-9954 to settle an IRS problem...I didn't call them back. This can't be legal...why can't these people be stopped? I am on the NO CALL list but it must not work.
They can't be stopped because they are in either India or Pakistan and beyond the reach of US law. They regularly ignore all US laws.
Call blocker is your best bet and do not pick up on calls you do not recognize.
This is a total scam. IRS never cold-calls people and demands money. All communications initiated by IRS are by US mail. All tax assessments by the IRS are subject to negotiation and compromise. IRS does not file lawsuits. Lawsuits are handled by the DOJ. IRS rarely goes to court. Tax disputes are basically civil matters and 90% of all tax disputes are settled administratively.
Received a phone call from 1-933-566-3611 that left a voice mail saying there is a lawsuit against me filed by the IRS and that I have to call immediately on 202 618 1898. Didn't call, googled the number instead.
