I recieved a call today, 02/13/13 from this number, They left this automated message:
We wanted to inform you of an additional refund of $2173.00 to be paid to you. As a measure of security we require you to call our department of verification @ 202-800-7738. Your refund will be credited to your account once we verify your credentials.
I did call the number back from a different phone and when they answered they answered it as the IRS. I advised them that I recieved a call from them and they asked my name to which I gave them, then the said the last 4 digits of my social, I told them that was not the last 4 digits (though it was) and they said sorry we had the wrong number. I then made a phone call to the IRS (waited on the phone for 45 mins, It was worth the wait) to find out if someone had used my identity to file taxes, after some research they advised me that as of today no one has attempted to file under my social security number and it sounded like these people were trying to phish for information. The IRS I could report them, So I did!!!
I got exactly the same call saying they were the IRS and was due the same exact additional refund amount of $2173. I knew something was not right with it. It is so sad that people get paid to scam others.
