Tell them you have a Mac, and that PC sucks. That really throws them into a rage. I usually let them talk for a minute while they explain it and then I tell them that.
Microsoft advised me that it is a scam. They want to access your PC and download phony errors that your systems allegedly generates and then try and sell you a error detecting program for several hundred dollars.
They allededly receive information from the PC IP address.
received call this evening @ 2130 hrs from some female with a heavy mid-eastern or south asian accent.
could not understand half of what she said. she asked if I was the man of the house, if I smoked, anybody have asthma. couldn't understand who she represented and finally hung up on her.
Got a call from this guy this morning, telling me that he was from microsoft and my laptop is going to crash. I told him i dont have a laptop. he told me i was lying lying.. LOL. then he asked if i had a pc and i said no.. he told me i was lying again....lol. I have a mac.. okay then he said you mac is gonna crash. for 15 minutes we argued and he would not give up then his supervisor came on and was mad.. lol.. and was telling me not to challenge him.. and now he gots my attention... hahaha.. i told him what you going to do about it .. this went on for at least 20 minutes. man these guys made my day.. dont give them any info its just a scam..
Seems to be a call routed through the UK, country code 0044. Best defense against these "people" (am being polite) is not to pick up calls, especially long distance ones, when the number is unknown to you. If you have an answering machine there will always be a message.
And I'd be careful about calling back as I've have heard of scams whereby when you call back your phone bill could be faced with an exorbitant long distance charge.
Also definitely call the no call registry and complain; its the only way authorities can obtain information about these types of modern day electronic plagues
