This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
I just got a email from this company ACS legal co. Stating I owe 502.00 for a payday loan from Cash Advance America. Should I call the # back? They say I have 2 days to call back. I m so tired of this I just had 2 other companies threaten me and called family members. I want this to stop, these other people all got emails in the last few hours, isn't that suspious??? We need to stop these idiots and put them away.
got the same e-mail and whats funny is if you really read this e-mail there are alot of misspelled words and the sentences don't make any sense it really is funny. Come on guys if your going to scam do it right and look intellegent my god. Mike Jones is who is in charge of my case mr mike jones, Its a scam and I reported them to the FTC, its easy to do, just go to the website. If any call you play along with them you will get them so upset they will start to call you names its really funny. You have to look at it as funny because it doesn't end if you let these scums upset you. Please though, report them to Federal trade commission. Don't get upset these people should be in jail not you and Karma is a real [***].
