This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

First of, a collector or a lawyer would not leave a threatening of arrest message on your voicemail.  Kevin Anderson with a heavy indian accent called from this number and left a threatening message that if I didn't pay my debt, I was going to get arrested.  I called him back, and the fool would not give me his bar#, complete name, address or any information of the debt.  So at the end I told him that unless I get any information about the debt, I was not making any payments and they can come and arrest me when they feel like it.  I reported the number to the Fiscal General.  Do not buy into this fool and send any money!!!

Just got a call from this guy telling me he was an attorney (Steve Anderson? it was very hard understanding him).  He told me he was calling from the Alabama FCI District Court  claiming that I had commited a "financial crime" and that I had to pay either $500 or $600 to "put my case on hold". He threw different outragous #'s at me and then asked me how much I can pay for the moment to avoid being arrested by my Sheriff's office and be detained for 90 days".  When I asked him for proof of my debt and he told me he didn't care about that and that I should pay or be served with papers and arrested.  No attorney would speak of a lega matter this way. DON'T give him a dime!
