Received call from 716-795-0239 saying I had received a gov't grant for $9,700. Was passed to number above and was given details. I needed to take $250. to site to get "card" where I could receive the grant. I would be paid back the $9,700 plus the $250.
I have received four calls in the past ten days from individuals with heavy Indian or Pakistani accents who have identified themselves as Persey and David Cooper claiming they were from Microsoft. The nature of the calls was that hackers were getting into my computer and that if I don't allow them to "fix" the situation for either $299 or $500, I will be held responsible for any wrongdoing the hackers commit. I was also told that if I didn't pay them, my computer would be unusable within ten minutes. When the caller told me I owed them money for their service my response was "Take me to court!". At that point the caller ended the call. The first call I received claimed that the hackers were from Beijing and seventy-seven people have access to my computer. I told him "How do I know you're not the hacker?".
The caller had the ability to operate my computer by remote to "porve" they were really Microsoft. They had my first name and the company I use as my ISP.
They also offered 646-915-0931 as a contact number.
