A person with a foreign (likely Eastern or Indian) called an elderly friend of mine with similar "Microsoft Tech" claim and wanted money. She got him off the phone, but he called again today. She called me and I called him every derogatory name I could think of, asked him how he got the number ... "She is listed as a registered user," he said. I asked where he stole this number from. "Now you are going to embarrass her," says he. Don't you ever call this number again, you SOB ... He has not called back ... but he had a eighty-some year old woman almost in tears. There ought to be an enforceable law against such creeps operating this way.
A man with a middle eastern accent saying his name was Steve Peterson called my wife from this number advising he was with Windows and that my computer was sending him alerts that hackers were attempting to break into my system. She refused to cooperate and hung up. Steve called again this evening and gave me the same story. I told him my computer showed no security alerts and he said that was because the hackers were running in the background, only he could see the alerts. He asked me to pull up my system security ID # and then he read it off letter by letter to me over the phone (where did he get that info?). Then he asked me to type a command into my computer at which time I refused and requested verification of his identity. He then advised he was with a company called GeekHelp that was licensed through Microsoft to offer protection against hackers. I told him I would have to contact him back and he repeated his phony name and number. I hung up and immediately checked the number.
Guy named Steve with Indian accent. Claimed he was with Windows technical support. Informed my computer is being hacked, was very persistent, and wanted me to log on my computer. I Absolutely did not...
Some man calling himself as Mark Johnson from Windows tech support with a very strong accent called me a few minutes ago and let me know that there are some hidden problems in my computer and offer help. He wanted me to start my computer and then he would tell me what to do. I said that I am leaving and asked for the number so that I could call back. He gave me (206) 452-3544. I asked him where he was calling from and he said that he is from Seattle and that he is with Geeks for help. The caller ID indicated a very strange number V917111625000109.
If you granted the caller remote access to your computer, immediately unplug it from all outlets and take it to a reputable computer repair/service location to be checked for malicious software (malware) and spyware. I guarantee you there is software on there now that you DO NOT want and that will leave you vulnerable to ID Theft.
