I just got a call from these people telling me that I am getting a government grant and to go pick it up at Walmart. But first that want me to call 202 684 6332 for more instructions.
Received phone call at 3pm yesterday from this #206-708-2849 seattle, WA, I am in Montréal, Canada so did not answered...
Then at 7PM, received two phone calls from # 514-826-1869 (Montréal) but didnt know so didnt not answered...but then I had 2 voice mail from 2 different people with different phone numbers saying I just called them so I could call back and left me their phone number...Finally, they called me back and I told the lady I never called her...I made no calls at all yesterday...but she had my phone number on her caller id...that's weird!!!
These are ALL scam calls of one type or another. Do-not-call lists are totally worthless since crooks don't obey laws by definition, and the fines when (rarely) caught are a tiny cost of doing business. Blocking numbers is also a fools errand since these low-lifes change their number every few days. Maybe you like to block tens of thousands of numbers (?).
The only real solution is to attack the "business" model itself. The robot dialer just dials random numbers looking for a working phone. Some computer dialers can simultaneously dial 100's of numbers per second. If you press 1, then you get connected to the crook. Maybe one in a million is a blue-haired old lady who will sign up for anything. That's GOLD to them!
My idea? Not really mine, but if the phone companies would institute a 5 sec delay before completing any outgoing call this would slow the robo to the point of being impractical. The average legit caller would not notice the delay but it would kill the entire robo model ... scammers, telemarketers, AND political hacks.
Same scam with different numbers. Idiots need to be called back and harassed but their number does not work for incoming calls. Did not answer....did not leave message....there will be payback one of these days.
