This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

I received a call from 209-264-2621 and said there was a claim against me and they have tried this from many other numbers. I know it is a scam because once I did call and told them I would follow up with the courts and they told me to go ahead because that is where they received my information. I called the courts and nothing had been filed. If it were true I would have been served in person or by mail. Do not answer or they will call you back.
I have had calls from this number multiple times in the last few weeks. I decided to call their bluff and call back and talk to somebody. He knew the bank that I use, my work and old home address. If this is a serious call, I obviously want to take care of it, but OBVIOUSLY I'm not going to pay them over the phone with my card...or pay them PERIOD without really knowing what's going on. How is it possible that they would have my bank and work information??
Call is computer generated by a different number (I been blocking the numbers) for Cecilia Delgato. It seems as if "Cecilia Delgato" is an undocumented person who the scammers are trying to exploit into paying them money to keep law enforcement from being involved.
