Report the calls to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General. Let your HR Dept or manager know you're being harassed by scammers. Tell the callers that the FBI is monitoring and recording all calls they make to you and that your attorney will also use the recordings to go after them for multiple violations of the FDCPA.
My husband just got a call like that at work. I tried to call to find out if this was or debt and they would not even send me the info. According to the FTC they have to prove it is your debt. It is not you that have to prove to them that it is not your debt. It is against the law for them to say anything that is false in order to get your money. Here is the website to the Federal Trade Commission, check it out, www.ftc.gov
The Better Business Bureau was very helpful in giving me all the information I need. Everyone who has had to deal with this company, please REPORT THEM!
I am getting call after call on my work and cell phone number from a man with a heavy accent from some law firm. He states there is a suit against me and then I told him to go ahead and send it to me then. He will not tell me what it is in regards to.
I hung up on him at work and he rang my phone there over and over.. pure harrassment.
How do I report this person. The area code is in OHIO somewhere but the phone number cannot be found in reverse look up
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
