Same as Kay on 28 Jul 2013.
My techs name was Jack and I haven't yet gotten a call from Opra yet. It's definitely a SCAM. The two directories that he directed me too were both harmless per Norton and Malwarebytes scans. Said he was located in Houston, TX but had a strong Indian (asian) accent.
Caller claimed to be a "level 2 technician" from Microsoft following up on a report that our computer was "receiving" corrupted files. Checked....Microsoft does not initiate house calls. The number 239-247-5552 was given as a follow up number. My advice: don't install anything they offer.
Got a call from Microtech and said that my recently installed Microsoft software had possibly downloaded a virus. I was aware of this scam and asked for a call back number and told them I could not access my computer at the moment. Got 239-247-5552 as the call back number. What was frightening is that I had installed new Microsoft software just a few days ago. I also denied that I had Microsoft operating systems and he man challenged me about this. Somehow, these people are accessing information to know that I actually do have MS ;products.
Got a call today, 11/14/2013 from "toll free number" 888-681-6925. The man calling had a strong Indian (India) accent. He said he was calling from Micotech. That our computer had sent them a message saying it had downloaded corrupted files.
He asked if I had noticed any problems with the computer lately. In fact the day before I had a good deal of problems with my word processing program, but I had chalked it up to too many files open at once.
But since he had called me and not me him, I wouldn't give him any information and asked for a number for a tech savvy friend of mine to call him back on and he gave me 239-247-5552.
He then became demanding and somewhat insulting in his tone, saying you mean you can not even turn on the computer yourself?
I asked him to wait a minute, and called my computer guy on my cell and he told me to hang up that it was a scam. That Microsoft, who this guy said he was a tech for, never calls you. That just because when I had a hang up and my computer screen said it was sending info to Microsoft, that they would ever call me back. He asked me to ask this guy what files were corrupted and what virus was it that had gotten into my computer.
The Indian said that there were millions of viruses out there that could get in. I said if you got a message from my computer then how come you can't tell me the name of the viruses that has corrupted it. He then started talking loud and fast and got a little belligerent, telling me that I had lots of viruses affecting my computer! I asked for what file(s) the corruption was in and he did the same act, loud, fast, hostile.
To get as much info as possible I asked him what he wanted me to do and he said to find the Ctrl key (control key) on the computer and look next to it on the same line. This was the MICROSOFT KEY (the key with a square symbol on it divided into 4 blocks) and press that together with the "R" key. This then would bring up a box where you could type in a file or program name and pull it up on your computer. At that point I told him I would have to call him back and hung up.
Also yesterday I had trouble with Yahoo and had to call them to get access to my account. I have been having a lot of trouble with Yahoo lately, and they suggested that Google Chrome did not work well with their program. I don't know. Just saying...everything is suspect now. That I get adds for anything I research on the internet immediately after searching for something, bothers me too. That I get spam from scum sites and I can't block it because they just use another IP address to send from bothers me. Seems to me that IF we were really worried about our security and invasion by others or terrorists that we would FIRST secure our borders...which to me includes our technology borders into our country. I have heard many experts saying we HAVE the capability to do this, that the government just will not spend the money for this, they prefer to give it to constituents that will vote for them in the next election. How about that one billion dollars to the airline industry to check people at the airports that has just been shown to have had no effect AT ALL. Money like that would have been better spent on internet security.
got a call from a heavy accented asian/indian guy. he claimed to be from Microtech and said my computer was being hacked. he wanted me to go over to my computer and punch in some info. i refused to do it and he started getting upset with me, telling me it had to be done right now. i took down his number instead and went online to check the number out for myself. looks like a SCAM to me!
