what bothers me the most is that even with caller id they have disguised their phone number - what are they hiding

And yeah, when we're mostly college students working to pay for college so that we can 'just get a real job', this pays really well. I don't think anyone of us likes working there, but it's a job that will pay the bills.
If you hang up, say "I'm on the national DNC list", or any of that, you go right back in the system. If you don't want any more calls, ask politely to remove your number from our list. We're just caller monkeys, we don't have any control over when and where we call. All we're wanting is a little respect.
