I reported the message you received, allegedly from the IRS, to both the Attorney General's office of OHIO (1-800-282-0515) and to the Treasury Department, Inspector General's Office for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
This is a scam and when I called the number several times, the first time, the person identified themselves as Todd Miller, IRS. The first time, I asked them for the switch board number to verify they were Todd Miller and that it was the actual IRS. They told me to call 1-800-[***]-You and I informed them I was retired Treasury, Secret Service and that I was reporting them to the above offices and they hung up.
I called back and a person of Indian descent answered as SWITCHBOARD and I asked what their name was and they said "Switch Board" and they is their name and their father was in the Army. I informed them again that I was a retired federal law enforcement office and that I was reporting them and the phone number.
I called back two other times and received a high pitched squeal, not a fax tone.
So I reported them. by phone to the OHIO Attorney General's office and online at the website: http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml to the TIGTA.
If you receive any further calls from someone claiming they are from the IRS or Ohio department of taxation - report them. The IRS only does business by U.S. Postal mail - not by telephone. IT IS A SCAM.
