Turn your ringer down on your phone or leave the phone off the hook.My ex used to do that since he worked nights and did not want phone calls waking him up.
Received a phonecall tonight from 304-743-8823. A man with a thick accent told me that they had been monitoring my computer usage and noted that I had downloaded a virus and he could help me fix it. Knowing that this was a scam attempt, I decided to play along and asked how much it would cost me. He told me nothing and he would walk me through the fix. He told me to turn on my computer. I lied and said I did. Then he said something I couldn't understand, so I told him that I would just go get my computer fixed. He then told me he would transfer me to his supervisor. Mr. Supervisor came on the line and in a less accented voice told me that Windows had been monitoring my computer usage and noticed I had downloaded a virus and he could help me. I then told him that I don't have Windows. He asked if I used a Mac, to which I replied "Yes, I do." He quickly said "Wrong Number!" and hung up.
They call frequently and ask me to turn on my computer so they can "help" me resolve all the errors I have been getting. I told them I would not turn on my computer. They asked why and I said because they are clearly criminals trying to steal information from me and they hung up right away. The last time they called they said that I am getting too many error messages on my computer and they wanted to help me. I asked how many errors and they said too many to count. I told them I don't own a computer and they hung up.
Long silence... as I was going to hang up I heard an accented woman say "hello?" She then proceeded to tell me that they have reports of problems with my computer. I interrupted her, asking if she felt bad scamming people with this "bs" (but I used the full words), don't ever call me again, and then hung up. After reading the posts here, next time I will stay on the line to see if I get a colorful response back!
I received a call from this number a few moments ago. A man with an accent speaking over a lot of background noise tells me he's calling about a software check.
I asked him what software was this concerning and he couldn't answer; I repeatedly asked him if he were from Dell (I knew it wasn't), again he could not answer. So, I told him before I gave him any information, that I wanted to know what company was calling me.
Instead of giving me any company name, he told me that he was based in South Carolina (304 is an area code for West Virginia). With that, I told him that I couldn't understand him, hung up and blocked the number.
