As soon as I filed for Social Security benefits I started getting these calls. Sometimes 10 a day. Since both our land and cell service is in my name I get the calls. My husband has been collecting Social Security for a few years and has never received the calls. I believe his Social Security activation did not trigger any phone service connections and thus, no calls. My conclusion is that social security data bases are the connection used for these scams.
These calls are coming mostly out of India and Pakistan. Think about where the majority of call centers are also. I highly doubt SS has anything to do with it. Sooner or later your number ends up getting dialed with robo calls made from dialers and computers. And with all the security breech's there is a lot of folks info out there. If you ever filled anything out online, they hijack info from those as well. Got FB? There's another source is your info is open to the public. Set it to private. Google your name & number, you might be surprised at just what is out there and available for your information and even listed relatives. You can make those places (and should) remove your info.
Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
Report the Calls to the real IRS here:
•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.
Also got this choppy robot call this morning at 7:10. I reported immediately to the TIGTA site. Not that they'll do anything but I know I'm in for a few days of this crap.
