I received a call on my cell phone. When I answered, they hung up. I promptly called back. The person/rep had a thick accent and I wasn't able to understand much of what he said. He said something and then 'Revenue Service'. I thought he was trying to say Internal Revenue Service or at least put a city name in front of it that I couldn't understand. My accountant said the scammers will usually say something other than 'internal'. However, the victim often thinks the caller said 'internal'. Anyway, the rep asked my name and I would only give my first name. He then asked if I was aware of a lawsuit against me and asked if I had an attorney. He again mentioned 'revenue service' and then I believe he was saying I owe money because my tax returns were filed incorrectly. From what I could understand, he was saying I could get into criminal trouble due to the audit. Either he didn't say an amount (that I allegedly owe) or I didn't understand the amount. Basically, the call didn't last very long because I couldn't understand him. I kept interrupting him and he didn't like that. Upon hanging up, I asked my accountant because I haven't received any IRS documents and I haven't moved recently. He said the IRS isn't going to reach out via a method other than the mail until they have sent numerous ignored documents. He agrees that it's a scam.
Caller left message. Said officer Johnson of the Internal Revenue Service. Not to disregard message and to call back before they took further action against me. I also have not received anything from the IRS, and file jointly. My phone number is not on our papers. It is a scam. I will be calling the IRS tomorrow and filing a complaint.
