I have a panasonic call blocking phone from Costco. It works great. Calls like this only happen once. I "save" the number to my blocked caller list inside the phone and never have to worry about them again. I have over 20 numbers and growing.
The guy above is correct. The Federal "Do Not Call" registry is a total joke. Less than 10 companies have been prosecuted in over 10 years. Pending Lawsuits from telemarketers have have frozen the enforcement and congress is too weak to give them any teeth.
You are on your own in this fight against the telemarketing scum out there. No government agency is there to help you.
You have two choices. Answer these B.S. calls over and over. Or answer once, add them to your OWN "Do Not Call" registry and never have to worry about calls from that number again.
We all wish the Federal program actually worked, but now that you know it does not, and likely will never protect you, you might investigate a low cost solution that can help preserve your sanity.
Call came through at 6:47 pm PDT on 25-July-2011. Didn't recognize the number and noted that the Caller ID name just displays the replicated number. No msg left on ans machine. Obvious scam, and similar calls have come in over the past several weeks, sometimes identified as "Stim Obama" or "Obama Stim" - probably shortened from stimulus. This scheme is in reference to someone trying to get you to refinance.
DNC list not working. These people figure that as they're using computer-spoofed numbers, they'll never be caught.
Thanks to all for your informational postings.
Never give out personal or financial information to these scammers.
'Obama Stim' calls about same times 5P-7P every night. Usually dont answer it but tried tonight and got robo-hang up. Appreciate info on this scam above.
To: TiredOfScumbagScammers: You're absolutely right, it does no good to report them and the Do Not Call List is a Joke!!!! I resolved most of the inconvenience of these calls by purchasing a Panasonic phone system where I can block any call I choose, including those that have "Private Number" or "Out of Area" on the caller ID. It saves me a lot of inconvenience! Although my phone will still ring once, it will only ring once and caller ID says "Blocked". For the other end (these scumbags) all they hear is one ring, then nothing but a fast busy. It has helped to cut down on the number of calls I get, although it takes awhile for their system to "get it". The phone system was worth every penny I paid for it!!
