Same happened to me as well. I didn't know the ins and outs of how fraudulent check scams work so I went along with it for awhile. I can across this information just in time. What ever you do DO NOT deposit/cash the check. If you have received it write VOID on it and take it to the police. Then tell them you are no longer interested in the transaction.

I'd call the police. Tell them what they said and that you are afraid they will try to steal the car. If there's a policeman around, I doubt they will even get out of the car. In the meantime, why not email him and tell him the car is no longer for sale and you will return his check (if one actually shows up.).
