I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
This is one of those infamous Dept of Legal Affairs calls where a person with a foreign accent tells you that you will be subject to fines and legal action if you do not pay bogus fines. Call out of Bronx New York
Received a call from my father saying a man named Steve Thomas was looking to speak with me regarding legal issues under this phone number. When I call this phone number the man said that I owe taxes to the IRS and they have tried to reach me numerous times but since they have not been able to reach me they consider it that I am ignoring them and will take a legal action and issue an arrest warrant right then and there on the phone. I stated to him that I no longer live at the address he has for me and I have filed at least two tax returns under my new address. I stated if the IRS has an issue with me that they would issue a statement to my current address and told him I would call the IRS myself and hung up on him. The IRS does not conduct business in this manner please do not give any information to these people beware!
I received a call from this number saying it was Jeff Thomas asking for attorney information from me regarding the case against me. I told them I had no idea what they were talking about. They told me to write down and call another number for Officer John Spencer right away. I called the number and the number just rang and rang. I hung up and immediately received a call back from Jeff Thomas telling me that the number was busy and he would connect me to someone else. He supposedly forwards my call to someone and I tell them that I better hear from someone who can detail the charges against me or I would consider the call a scam. At that point, the call disconnected. I received a call back again saying that I had hung up on them. Anyway, at some point a guy gets on the phone and says that he will detail the charges for me and that the call was being recorded. As soon as he says, "Count one….." I say, hold on, I need to take some notes while you are talking to me. He tells me that I interrupted him and that he warned me not to do that. I told him that this isn't how government operates and that I guess he would just have to start the proceedings to have me arrested.
Received three messages from this number stating this is an important message for me to resolve a legal issue that needs immediate action. When I called, they stated that this was for back taxes and the IRS was turning it over to them and there was a warrant for my arrest. I asked how it would have gotten to this point as I had not heard from the IRS. They said the IRS had sent me letters and I had not responded. I told them I would risk being arrested and that I was reporting the number.
A man named "John Peters" called my work stating that if I didn't return his call I would be served with legal papers. Called phone number he called from and it's a disconnected # called 3474080225 and it was him. Told him I needed his business information and address and he hung up on me.
