We just received a message exactly as described above. It was meant for my daughter. We don't answer unknown numbers, and looked up the number after hearing his message. Thank you to everyone who posted previously.

•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
Just got the following call for my daughter. Very heavy Indian accent. I am so thankful for all the posts confirming this is a scam because he sounded so official until his last remark.
"This message is intended for xxxxxxxxxx. Hi xxxxxx this is Shawn Williams with Department of legal affairs for the US treasury and I was trying to reach you in regards to a very important issue. This is a verbal notification for xxxxxxxxx in regards to a law enforcement action that has been started against your name. My number is 347-408-0709. Again the number is 347-408-0709. If for any reason you're busy to call back I would suggest you to have your retained attorney to do as soon as today calling us might end up into a legal mess. I hope you take this right and call me right back. Again it's Shawn Williams with Department of legal affairs US treasury. Looking forward to speak with you. Until then have a blessed day."
My family just had the same message left for them word for word. However I have not lived at that number for 9 years and they used my maiden name. Glad I found this site, but if this was real they would easily I'm sure be able to find my current information.
Someone called today from number 247.408.0709 saying to call us back immediately about a legal matter that involves you. Didn't return the call because its a scam.
