They called about wanting to serve papers to my place of business (which there is none, since I've been unemployed).

Scam call. You don't "forfeit your rights" if you refuse to call. You also don't get a heads up if you're being served a court summons - the process server just shows up, unannounced. Please do report your caller to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General. Your caller will likely try again - don't give them the time of day. If they were legitimate, they would've sent dunning letters and a debt validation letter, not made threatening phone calls.
