Report them also to the Federal Trade Commission: https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01
And if anyone outside of Georgia is receiving calls from these bumbling crooks, file a complaint with your state's attorney general. The contact info for each state's AG is here: http://www.naag.org
Good job, Deb! If everyone realized that it's ALWAYS a scam when someone calls and demands money to prevent an arrest, then crooks like those who called you would be out of business fast.
You may want to also give the FBI a heads-up about these crooks. You can easily do that online: http://tips.fbi.gov
These people called me and claim that if I didn't settle the debt today that they would summons me to court and it would cost me double. I ask what it was in reference to and they claim a credit card debt that was unpaid. They claimed that chase Manhatten had bought the credit card co. and couldn't give me the orginal credit card co. name. Only that Chase had handed it over to them for collections. At that point I asked them when the card was issued and they said in 1998. I knew for sure it wasn't my debt at that time and ask for a number to call them back which they were VERY reluctant to give. I then went to check my credit report online to see if someone had gotten hold of my identiy in 1998 and to no surprise there was never a card issued to me in the year 1998. They called back within a hour or so saying they would settle for even less and requested my bank acct #. I gave told them no just take me to court. After that I called the local police who immediately called them to let them know that they were following up on a complaint from a local citizen and would be checking into the situation further. So far no one has called back and if they do, after reading these statements I am going to have a few choice words for them. Thanks to everyone for reporting this co. I will be making complaints everywhere in hopes to shut these scam artists down
WOW! I always come here to type in phone numbers to see where they are calling from. Usually, I check numbers for my cell. This total [***]. The guy calling looking for Vanessa So-and-So. I asked who that was. He said that this number was given as contact information about a civil suit against me. When he asked "Is this the Smith residence? Do you know this person?" When I said No, he hung up. I didnt think about it until about 2 minutes after the conversation. I am with the National Do Not Call Registry and I thought it would stop all these calls.
Criminals typically don't abide by the law, let alone the Do Not Call regulations. Besides, had these particular crooks been real debt collectors, they could still legally call because debt collectors are exempt from the DNC.
Regardless, if these grifters call you again, be sure not to give them any information about yourself and tell them not to call again. If they ignore you and call again, report their crooked [***] to the many law enforcement agencies listed in this thread.
