I answered the phone and told them to call me back at a later time since I was at work and he started yelling at me - since 10:00am CST, I have had 19 missed calls - and it is now 10:15 am CST - he is blowing up my phone! Does this classify as harassment??
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
Can someone pleased help me out...I've been getting calls from this number. The person says I owe large amount of money. He also says that I will be arrested if I don't pay. I need advice on what I should do
I received a call first on my cell phone. I looked at this sight before I gave the number a call back. Same as all of you guys. Heavy Indian accent with an attorneys office calling about a loan I have no knowledge of. Then they started calling my place of business. 6 calls within 5 minutes. Then they block the number and I had to answer the call for fear it was a real client. After a few times of me hanging up on them and them hanging up on me, they called me some very ugly curse words and hung up. Very annoying. I have registered all of my numbers with the Do Not Call Registry. But, it takes 30 days to go into effect.;(
