Who called from 4053531227

Just got a call from this number. Caller ID shows unknown number. 405 is a "middle" Oklahoma number, and since I live there, my ID should show who's calling. I don't trust people that try to hide who they are!

Well, Betty, just because the number shows up as 405 area code doesn't mean that the "caller" is located anywhere in or even near Oklahoma, granted the 405-353 exchange supposedly is Mustang area. You probably have heard of caller ID number spoofing, that is that the number that displays on your readout may not have anything to do with who is calling. Call trace *67 is the only real way to find out what is actually the calling source, but this service costs over $10 each time you use it AND you have to supply your carrier with the police report that you filed. No, "will-file" doesn't meet the phone carriers' legal requirements.

The carrier for 405 3531227 is Bandwidth.com. And this particular number is one of their SMSEnabled VoIP numbers that provides Anonymous Calling service. That means that Bandwidth.com allows the customer to make calls that do not identify who the caller is. And since this is a SMSEnabled VoIP, then someone with a cell phone (smart or otherwise) can make calls to anyone they like The VoIP part adds web access to this service. That means someone could set up a rudimentary database on their laptop/PC, then purchase some sort of autodialer to start making their cold calls. Does this meet Do Not Call rules? Not for a microsecond: if the caller were a legitimate company why hide caller ID name as "Unknown" or "Out of Area?" Remember, Do Not Call lists are only for the good, legal people. A scammer will use Do Not Call list to start making anonymous calls to those on DNC list.

Bandwidth.com is a legitimate company based in Raleigh, NC. You can look up their website at bandwidth.com and view all their services. And some of their services sound very good and legitimate. However, like any company, there are some customers who either abuse or outright violate the proper use of Bandwidth.com's service agreement.

So what to do about this caller who doesn't leave a message? Well, it comes down to how much work you want to do. Again, could initiate call trace for local police to trace then prosecute. Or could contact Bandwidth.com, complain about the number calling you and see if they will do anything. That is, anything other than say "poor baby" and hold your hand in a virtual manner.

Your best bet is continue what you are doing now: if you don't recognize this number AND the caller is too scared to have their name listed in caller ID name window, then don't answer it. If you have a phone  that blocks calls or call blocker, could add this number to Blocked list. But as Bandwidth.com says for their service, they will provide a new virtual number whenever customer needs it. Meaning, they may start calling you from 801, 417, 213 or any other area code.
