If the caller honestly is with the Oklahoma chapter of Fraternal Order of Police, then 918 should be the calling area code--Oklahoma State Fraternal Order of Police mailing address is P.O. Box 690418 Tulsa, OK 74169-0418.
However, very few real, honest charitable organizations have the budget for outbound cold calling. There are many "organizations" or well meaning groups who say they are soliciting funds to be passed onto specific named charities. There are even legitimate corporate companies that solicit on behalf of one or more charities (using the word "legitimate" in a very loosely defined sense meaning that the company has registered with a state's corporation commission).
But if you really want to stop them in their tracks, then ask for their exempt organization number. This is the number issued by IRS that an organization meets federal guidelines for tax exempt status. http://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ is the link to the IRS' Exempt Organization application (this app replaces Publ 78).
Or, just don't answer any calls that have caller ID names of "Unknown" or "Out of Area." That'll show them that you mean business, right?
It's a call center in OK City, according to another site (I called it back blocked )they say it's Oklahoma fraternity of police fund raising. I hung up I do not give to anyone calling for donations.
Thank you for the information. I did not realize that such practices were so common. I guess I thought that because there are rules, laws, and guidelines that nothing bad could be happening to good people! Just because I would never do it doesn't mean other people won't. That's why there ARE so many rules, laws, and guidelines I guess-finding the one way or other to stop scamming from happening. Seems like some people work really hard to find ways to cheat the system. If they used their energy for something constructive, just imagine the possibilities!
Claimed to be fundraising for fraternal order of police. Wanted a commitment of $15.00. My son answered the phone and didn't know any better and told him he could send $5. The guy got really loud and hateful over the phone, practically demanding $15. The scary part is that the caller made a reference to my husband's place of employment. Just hang up people! Even if they are fundraising only a tiny portion of what they collect if any goes to the police/firefighters etc. You would be much more effective making a direct donation.
