However, very few real, honest charitable organizations have the budget for outbound cold calling. There are many "organizations" or well meaning groups who say they are soliciting funds to be passed onto specific named charities. There are even legitimate corporate companies that solicit on behalf of one or more charities (using the word "legitimate" in a very loosely defined sense meaning that the company has registered with a state's corporation commission).
But if you really want to stop them in their tracks, then ask for their exempt organization number. This is the number issued by IRS that an organization meets federal guidelines for tax exempt status. http://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ is the link to the IRS' Exempt Organization application (this app replaces Publ 78).
Or, just don't answer any calls that have caller ID names of "Unknown" or "Out of Area." That'll show them that you mean business, right?
Got a call last week from the fraternal order of police and the call was coming from PA, today it was from Mustang (the org is not in Mustang), so I'd say this is a scam.
Never ever give money to anyone who calls you. If you might be interested, ask for their website, go check it out then check out what % actually goes to the charity, usually it's less than 5% for all of them.
Salvation Army is the best one out there if you want to help, and your local food banks are always in need.
I got a call that said it was from the state chapter of FOP. I found their address online and wrote them a letter asking them to put my number on their Do Not Call list and their call center's Do Not Call List.
I don't give money away, either. I need it and I figure I'm more entitled to it than anyone else.
