Please don't fall for scams
Got a call from a "Mike Clark" from 408-940-9733 on Thursday, October 16 2014. I could barely understand a word from this guy as he spoke very broken English. Along with hearing other people in the back ground like he was calling from a tell-a-marketer den or something similar to that raised the red flags. From what I could understand, "Mike" indicated he was from the Department of Legal Affairs... blah blah blah... legal actions taken against me... blah garble blah... I will be in trouble... blah garble blah... legal nightmare if I don't respond!

Look, Its obvious these fools are running a scam and are fishing for personal information. I pray no one in their right mind hands it over to a shady bunch such as this or becomes a victim due to not being well informed. These people are roaches to put it politely and I commend sites like this that helps get the word out to watch out!

I just received the same call and refused to give my address, but they did have an old address of mine, which is concerning.  When I mentioned I was just at the IRS office a few weeks ago and I am positive there is no legal action against me, they hung up.

I got a call from 'June Taylor' who had a strikingly Indian accent also saying she was from the Dept of Legal Affairs and threatening legal action. She hung up on me when I suggested it was a curious name for someone with her accent. SCAM!!

I have been getting calls from 408-940-9733 and 408-335-6169 for the last few days, when I have answered my home phone which is also my business line, they thought they were getting a business so they hung up.

Today however the call connected and I was told by a man with a very thick accent that he was with the Legal Affairs Dept of the US Treasury and was calling to notify me of criminal action proceedings and a warrant being issued for my arrest.  He asked if I had an attorney and wanted their contact information and would give details regarding the warrant to my lawyer.  I said this was the first time I had heard of any of this and asked if there was a number I could call to get more details.  He gave me the 408-940-9733 number and a woman answered the call as "Legal Affairs US Treasury". I told her that I had just been contacted and was trying to find out what this was regarding.  She asked for my name and I gave it to her and she said that she had pulled up my account and could see that a warrant has been issued for my arrest, this warrant comes with a mandatory minimum of 6 months in prison without the possibility of bail or parole.  Needless to say, I was shocked and asked for more details.  She said that their office has sent me multiple notices and I have failed to respond, which indicated I intended to evade my obligation and was committing fraud. I continued to press her for information and she said this related to back taxes from 2008 that I owed in the amount of $4,986.23.

She said at this time the IRS has made the decision not to accept any money from me and had turned the matter over to a criminal charge for tax evasion and fraud.  I asked if there was anything that could be done to avoid this and she said they only way to stop the proceeding and revoke the warrant was for me to go and purchase a voucher for a minimum of 50% of my debt and she would need to confirm the serial number of the voucher over the phone.  After that, she said an IRS agent would come to my address and I was to turn over the voucher to them at that time.

All of the things she was saying, while pretty convincing, made me a bit suspicious. I Google searched the number I called and that is when I saw multiple entries of fraud and scam notices.  I immediately started asking her questions such as, was there information on the Treasury website regarding these vouchers I was supposed to purchase? She said that I had already been sent that information.  I asked her for another number with the Treasury or IRS where I could confirm the allegations and/or verify the amount she claimed that I owed.  She said I had reached the department where I could verify the amount owing.  I said how do I know you are who you say you are? She replied,"Ma'am you are the one who has committed fraud and you want me to verify my identity?  Well it is obvious that you have no intention to resolve this matter, so I am contacting the authorities to have you arrested."  She then made it appear as though she was contacting someone and said, "yes we need to have her picked up because she is not going to pay her debt" and then hung up.

I immediately called my local police department and they confirmed that this was a scam, there is no warrant for my arrest and had an officer take a report.  I have since spoken with my state Justice Department and their fraud hotline representative asked that I also contact the US Treasury to report this incident.  If you get a similar call, you should also consider reporting it to the Treasury at 800-366-4484.

I have to say they really scared me and almost got me to hand over all the money I had in my bank account, which by the way she also said my accounts were being frozen and all assets were to be seized.  I hope others don't fall for this like I almost did.
