It is the PA Fireman's Association, and it is legit - my husband donated to them last year (he's a sucker) and we DID receive tickets (I think to Sesame Street Live - which my Aunt very happily took my cousin to). But their tactics are AWFUL. I would much rather write a check to my local fire department, so I know where my money is going to.
Same thing happened to me. Same exact conversation. Kept asking for so and so, but wouldn't reveal who they were after I asked several times. So I just hung up on them. So I went looking online too.
What does that tell you? I think that any telemarketer that won't identify themselves must be hiding some terrible secret. Maybe they're crooks? Maybe they're in some sweatshop and don't know ANYTHING about being a firefighter?
I've made it a policy never to donate to any "national" firefighting organization. I give DIRECTLY to my local volunteer firefighters, who are on call 24/7/365 to protect my family. I know those guys. I don't know some telemarketer who's never fought as much as a camp fire or even put out a match.
I give to the people who deserve to have my support. And those guys NEVER bother me with telemarketing. They have the courtesy to send me a letter when they need a donation.
