I'm tired of being polite to these yahoos that keep calling even after I've asked them to stop. Why isn't the FCC (or whatever government agency handles this stuff) doing anything to stop them? Even though I let all my landline calls go through the answering machine, it's still annoying. For years after I left my first husband I was getting calls from financial institutions he owed money to (TN is a state that makes spouses liable for each others' debts). I was always afraid to answer the phone because those collection agencies are vicious. Now these annoyance callers can get around caller ID by using false names or something, I get the heeby-jeebies when a call like that pops up, thinking it's a bill collector. No one should be afraid to answer their own phone.
Spoke w/ rep "Eva" from Customer Contacts Inc. She was seeking info about various businesses that middle aged men utilize. Very nice woman, and very forthcoming with the company information. The call is legit and allowed by law. The National Do Not Call registery does not protect against this type of calls.
I still requested to speak with her supervisor and the manager on duty was Christine K. Again a very polite woman that was happy to share info about who they are and who they represent. The are a market research service hired by companies in your local area. All one needs to do is politely indicate that you do not wish to participate and to please remove your number. They will, but as I've been called "randomly" a few times, I bet it is only for the survey they are conducting this time. I guess I will see soon enough.

I didn't answer ... or rather I usually hit the speaker button and let them listen to whatever happens to be on at the time. If it's a family member, they'll shout one of our names and I pick up. If it's a solicitor there's a pause (while they listen for an answering machine) and then a Hello, Hello, Anyone there? I allow them to enjoy the TV or Radio or dog barking until they hang up. I just LOVE the bill collectors who shout into the phone ... "I know you're there and not answering won't stop us from calling!" Yeah, well, keep calling ... you can't bleed blood outta a turnip!!
