I got the same call. Same message, MO, and Indian accent. They certainly had a lot of information about me, name (first last) and phone number. My number is unlisted and I do not give this out randomly. I've only shared my number to family and business associates. I'm worried how they even got my phone! The line was cut while I was on the phone. I then tried to call IRS (a listed number) to verify and investigate the reason for such a call. I only received a recorded greeting confirming that due to the government shut down the IRS and its offices are closed until government resumes. Curiosity got the better of me, and I traced the number. It's unlisted with a an approximate physical location in Downieville, CA, and the phone company administering the number is Bandwidth.com (a VOIP telecom) company. Since it is a VOIP, the caller could really be located anywhere. However if he is a subscriber to the VOIP service, I hope we can (through their help, Bandwidth.com) find the culprit behind these scams.
I am a CPA and former IRS agent and "Roy Smith" called my client even though the IRS is shutdown. Don't give them any information! This is a scam. There is no such thing as a government employee working for no pay.
Wow. I could hear all of the Indian-accented voices in this obvious boiler-room setup. Why would the IRS be calling me at 5:00AM California time? But the scariest thing was that after I hung up the first time, the dude called back and said "don't you hang up on me." It had all of the earmarks of a classic phishing scheme. I hope these people get what's coming to them.
Not only did they call me two days in a row at 4am but wwhen I returned the call they told me that if I sent them 500.00 $ that would settle my account. When I told them I didn't have 500 they rudely said then there is nothing we can do and hung up.
