Scam! they call from different spoofed numbers all the times. To all the people who answer these calls (you should not answer a number you do not recognize anyway - that is what voice mail is there for) never, ever attempt to press any number "to get removed" from their list. In doing so, you are just confirming, as someone said above, that your number is a valid one and a real human is behind it. You will be getting more calls as these thugs sell numbers to one another.
Also, you can try to report them, but be aware that this is a waste of time. First, our government is impotent in chasing these criminals. Second, these criminals, once found, are mostly outside the US borders anyways. They only ones who respect and comply with the law are reputable companies. And these are never our problem.
Call blockers work somehow, but these criminals keep using "dead numbers" and sometime stolen real working numbers. They rarely call from the same number more than once - so a call blocker is as good as the disposable numbers they use.
Only when people stop answering their phones from unknown sources will these criminals go elsewhere. Meanwhile, we will have to suffer while others still fall for these scams.
PLEASE TRY NOT TO PICK UP THE PHONE WHEN IT RINGS FROM AN UNKNOWN NUMBER. Resist the temptation.
This call, like any I don't know, goes unanswered. I'm convinced even having a machine take them is bad since it still means your number is good. I turned mine off a while ago due to the high volume of junk calls I seem to be getting. LIVE NUMBERS AND EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE AS GOOD AS GOLD TO THESE CROOKS and you can expect yours to be sold if you even answer. They can hit also hit you from any number--including your own, which I have received on several occasions. As stated, the majority of these calls come from overseas and they likely have no knowledge of the DNCR, and they're certainly not going to care. STAY SAFE (IF POSSIBLE) AND COMPLETELY IGNORE THE PHONE WITH UNKNOWN NUMBERS.
I'd offer the same advice, but I, too, believe even having an answering machine isn't good. These crooks are fishing for personal information and live phone numbers, and even answering with a machine means they got a bite. Sadly, the telephone is becoming less safe all the time (landlines especially), and I'd expect it won't be long until even numbers within your area are risky to take. I got a call from a local number that turned out to be a bogus tech support call with a foreigner on the other end, and I am also getting calls with my own name and number showing up in the ID.
Thus number called 3/25/15 and showed up as Local. It rang 4 times and they hung up. I live in Tulsa OK area. I'm pretty sure that's the name they use on their phone account. Just another way to trick people.
came up as 607-238-3947. Since I don't know that number, I just didn't pick up. Problem solved, no matter who it was. If I don't know you, I'm not answering. If it is for a valid need, they will find a correct way to contact me. And if it is because someone dear has been involved in an accident, the police will come to your house. (I know, after 15 years in law enforcement.)
