Had the same problem Indian guy claiming my PC has virus and wanted to help me get rid of hacker ( Roger Drake ) who is accecessing my network from Canada. He called from payphone at 6:05 pm Tuesday April, 14, 2015. Me being stupid turned on my PC and there he was moving mouse pointer and took me to team review site to download program which I didn't do. I asked him name, he says Steve of Windows Tech Dept and phone number is 855-674-1190 and his extension is 1016. He asked for credit card info to get rid of viruses and I refused, so turned off my PC and turned on later to discover a gunmetal gray pop-up box appears waiting for password. I was upset a bit but not much because I don,'t keep anything on my PC aside from music. So there was nothing to take no stored credit cards, passwords. What I did was clean PC, then reinstalled Windows changed all passwords and installed Viper which is wonderful.
I am from The Netherlands. The person called my parents and told them the same story...hackers are active, virus etc. Then he took control over their computer (some remote access program) and tried to send money from their bank account. He was very interested when he found out my father is 80 years old. If I would live in the US, I would drive there and use a lot of physical violence on him or anyone that was using this pay Phone. I better not find out who he is because I am ready to buy a ticket and still fly over.
Unplug the computer and take it to a local computer repair place. Tell them what happened and have them find and fix anything the callers did.
Contact your father's bank and tell them what happened. They'll change his account numbers to keep the callers out. Also call every place where he has a credit card and have them change the account numbers.
The scammers probably aren't in the US. They are probably in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, or Kenya. In those countries scamming Americans and Europeans is not a crime. They can not be caught.
Just had 2 calls from 1-607-737-0186 and 1-607-324-9846 at exactly the same time. Seemed too fishy to me to answer. And both calls came in before 8 am. Not cool!
I just got a call. Their machine voice, left a voice mail, "this is final notice that IRS has been trying to reach you and is filing a law suit against you, please call 202-747-2140". I will call later and do what I do when I answer these phone calls, PLAY ALONG, play along with them as long as possible and waste their time. HAVE SOME FUN. 1) one time I got called about my computer errors, so I acted like a senior citizen and had them walk me over the phone of numerous steps to show me some errors with my computer. As a senior citizen they had to repeat over and over, plus trace back to previous steps...I did this for 30 minutes while I was in traffic. 2) I got a call from home security "we are in your area and would like to install....", I played along and gave them my address which was actually the address to the police station. ha ha
